History
Eagle River area resident Al Geiger brought pickleball to Eagle River from Arizona in 2009. At the time, the game was played on two courts behind Eagle River City Hall.
A few years later, lines were painted on the tennis courts at Riverview Park, creating two new pickleball courts. Another two were soon added and by the summer of 2013, the courts were attracting an average of 36 people three times a week throughout the summer. In 2016, we added two more courts, permanent nets and additional fencing.
Indoor play began during the fall and winter of 2012/2013 in the Northland Pines High School Field House.
The Eagle River Pickleball Association officially organized in 2014 and filed for 501(c)3 not-for-profit status. The group continues to raise money and make improvements to the Riverview Park playing area.
We have also helped to spread the game of pickleball to the nearby communities of Three Lakes, Phelps, Conover, Land O’Lakes, St. Germain and Sayner. As a result, pickleball has become one of the fastest growing sports in the Northwoods.
